Renewal

We love the concept of renewal.

Renew your energy. Renew your commitment. Renew your spirit. Renew your skin. Renew your wedding vows. Renew your faith. Renew your sex life.

Most of us are very familiar with the quest for renewal in some aspect of our lives or ourselves. How often, though, do we ponder what renewal really means? We tend to be focused on the path, the route, the methods, and the “keys” to renewal. Quicker is usually better.

Ironically, excessive or exclusive focus on the means rather than the essence and meaning of renewal can create obstacles to its achievement. In many cases, the essential element and quickest path to renewal is a simple shift in awareness and attention. Action is often more symbolic and secondary than necessary.

Renewal requires focus, contemplation, attention, and usually connection and engagement. Think about the last time you felt renewed, and if you think carefully you will likely see that something sparked a change in your attention and awareness.

If you are yearning for renewal in some aspect of yourself or your life, before you shift into action and embark on finding the quickest route to the end, experiment with investing some time in simply increasing your awareness, attention, and focus on the thing you want to renew. You might find that little other action is required, or that many of the “keys” are things right in front of you that you don’t normally take time to notice.
