How clear is your vision of where you want to be heading with your health, your physical body and your abilities in your fitness and/or your athletics? Can you actually see yourself achieving each of your goals? You MUST be able to see your success in order to achieve it.
The power of optimism and strong visualization is often over-looked in our lives, especially in our workouts. But ask any successful athlete and they will tell you the key to achieving any goal comes from the power of knowing without a doubt that you can do it, focusing on that confidence and then allowing the body to take you there. This same idea applies to all of us whether we are trying to bike our first century (100 mile ride), aiming at getting to the gym 3 days each week, or simply working to get rid of the body fat we have put on over the last 5 years. We must always be able to see ourselves achieve our goals and then the paths will become obvious.
To tap into this power of visualization, you must start with the general plan of being optimistic. Believe it or not this is a choice we make every day, every hour and even every second of our lives. The power of HOPE and optimism is the trump card you must always have in your hand, because trust me life is gonna deal some incredibly tough cards to all of us. In terms of your health and fitness, I recommend taking a positive look at each component of your wellness including your nutrition, your workouts and your lifestyle. For nutrition, take a step back and look at the gift you have been given that allows you to have the choice of eating well each day and at each meal. Most of us not only have the choice of eating nutritious meals each day, but also the luxury of eating organically, naturally and locally. Take pride in this gift instead of thinking you are cursed with ‘HAVING to eat healthy’ in order to stay thin. Trust me that eating healthy can be incredibly delicious and creatively different every day with a just little bit of extra energy. For your workouts, take a step back and realize that most of us are truly fortunate to have the free time and physical ability to get to the gym each day or take our morning run before work. Keep that idea in mind as your head into your workout and the energy you find in that will power you to a new high in your training. And lastly in your lifestyle, I challenge each of you to work towards finding a healthy work/life balance in your life. Realize that just as we make the choice each second to be an optimist, we also make the daily choice to live our life to the fullest. Find time on your weekends to spend time with loved ones. Make time at night after work to have an hour or two of downtime before bed without the distraction of TV, computers or work. Maybe a nice walk around your neighborhood? Look at cooking your meals ahead for the week as a fun project of trying a new healthy recipe. Make time for these small changes and you will begin to see a big shift in your daily energy and focus.
Now that you are taking an optimistic look at your wellness and health, this should help fuel the confidence in yourself to see each of your goals through to the end. If you need assistance in designing the perfect workout, cooking the healthiest meals, or finding the best method of meditation for you, then seek out the TOP professionals in your area to get you on the right track. And then with their help and your optimism and confidence you are set to begin the exciting adventure of achieving optimal health and performance.
And remember as my good friend Doug always says, don’t focus SO much on the end result that you forget to ‘Enjoy the Ride’. Half the learning and achievment comes during the path you take to get there! Good luck!
