Building as Pleasure

Pleasure starts in architecture when you start designing, and when taking all the restrains into account, you still come up with a design that unfolds unexpected potential. From a raw block of mass something functional and inspiring emerges. But the real beauty arrives once a building is realized and it matches or exceeds its target in terms of the satisfaction of the client and, even more so, the satisfaction of the user.

I remember a few years ago i went to Porto to the opening of Casa Da Musica by OMA/ Rem Koolhaas. I had been a part of the competition design team. In Porto, we looked for directions and one helpful pedestrian showed us the direction and told us excitedly how cool and amazing the building is and how proud the city is about the new iconic architectural addition. When we told him that we are the design team he invited us for drinks and could not stop raving about the creation. In cases like this, it is a pleasure to see the pleasure of architecture in people’s eyes. It is something that reminds us about our role and responsibility in our profession – and confirms ideas about how we engage with our public and ourselves.
