Succession planning is what I am all about! I wouldn’t want to work at a dead-end job, and my employees don’t either. I feel that transitions within a company are necessary for overall growth of the company.
My favorite inter-company growth is the employee that starts in an entry level position and grows to become a Manager, Director, or even VP. To me, promoting from within just makes sense; for starters, this person knows the ins-and-outs of the company. They’ve seen the successes and mistakes made by their predecessors and they know the company’s priorities. Lower level employees who work up the ladder also teach others how to be more efficient at their previous positions; which is very useful knowledge for the entire company.
Just because an employee knows the company well doesn’t mean that they are the absolute best choice for promotion. Downsides of promoting from within are few, but can be severe. I’ve always felt that a bad attitude can be contagious. Stagnancy within one position can limit creativity too, causing ‘arrested development’ of the employee’s skills; another reason to constantly promote from within.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have the ability to grow at all of my jobs, and I unrstand the benefits of having such growth in the company. If someone is passionate, focused and driven on the company, it only makes sense to promote and increase responsibilities. I like to think of my company as a company that is cutting-edge and always evolving; and I like to acknowledge that my employees are too.
