Michigan Senate issues ‘license to bully’

Last week, the Republican-controlled Michigan State Senate passed SB137 aka Matt’s Safe School Law over the protests of Democratic lawmakers.

The heavily amended bill offers no protocol for dealing with bullying, but does provide exceptions for bullying based on “moral convictions.”

It reads: “This section does not prohibit a statement of a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction of a school employee, school volunteer, pupil, or a pupil and parent or guardian.”

Sen. Gretchen Whitmer (D-East Lansing) assailed the bill, saying it provides a “blueprint for bullying.”

“The saddest and sickest irony of this whole thing is that it’s called ‘Matt’s Safe School Law,'” Whitmer told the Senate after the bill was passed. “And after the way you’ve gutted it, it wouldn’t have done a damn thing to save Matt. This is worse than doing nothing. It’s a Republican license to bully.”

Change.org has organized a petition campaign to repeal the new law. Sign the petition to overturn today.
