Transgender candidate for the NY City Council

Mel Wymore, formerly Melanie Wymore, is campaigning to become the first Transgendered New York City Councilman in 2013.

Wymore was elected as a woman to the Upper West Side community board over a decade ago and was elevated to board president in April 2010. He chose to enliven the ceremony by appearing as a man for the first time.

“Look, I’m the qualified candidate here, but I happen to be transgender,” Mr. Wymore told The New York Observer. “I do realize, however, that I’m an exemplar of a certain kind of difference that’s in a very small minority, so recognizing that, I have a particular responsibility and a voice to speak about difference  and inclusion.”
