The latest trend amongst Hollywood moms is discussing their children’s potential development into gay adults. Gwyneth Paltrow is the most recent celebrity to open up, discussing with Harper’s Bazaar the possibility that her seven-year-old daughter, Apple, might one day be a lipstick lesbian and proudly step into her mother’s Louboutins.
In the recent interview, Paltrow stated she has archived her most famous red carpet dresses, and that she once ironically thought her daughter might one day not appreciate them. She told the magazine, “I’ve been saving my clothes for her since before she was born. I was like, I’ll bet you anything I’ll have a daughter, and she’ll be a really cool butch lesbian and be so above clothes.” Paltrow continued, however, “If [Apple is] a lesbian, she’s a lipstick lesbian…She likes anything that is pretty, pretty, pretty or has a bow or a ruffle or is pink.”
Considering her enviable closet, perhaps Paltrow’s three-year-old son, Moses, might also one day feel so inclined to play dress-up.
Kate Winslet and Sarah Jessica Parker are other Hollywood mothers who have also divulged conversations had with their children about sexual orientation and identity.
Parker, who also possesses a closet in which any little girl (or boy) would find endlessly fabulous dress-up options, has stated that son James Wilke is curious as to what being gay is and that when answering as a parent, “You think very carefully and you’re prudent about the choice of words and you talk about people looking for happiness and fulfillment in your life and how all families are different and look different.”
Kate Winslet told V magazine last year that her son, Joe, once candidly inquired as to her thoughts on whom he might one day love. “Joe turns to me the other day and says, ‘One day I will have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, darling. Which would you prefer.’ And I said, ‘My love, that would be entirely up to you, and it doesn’t make any difference to me.”
