The grand limestone Apthorp apartment building on the Upper West Side of New York City, built by Astors and the recent home of the Baldwins, is currently showcasing furnishings and art to be auctioned off later this month at the Rago Arts and Auction Center.
A newly renovated, three-bedroom apartment has been transformed into the ultimate showroom for 20th and 21st century design pieces, including wrought iron works by Samuel Yellin from the 1920s and modern furniture by Hans Wegner (mostly chairs, of course). On display, also, is the Apthorp herself, in all her grandeur and exclusivity.
You may one day be lucky enough to live in the Apthorp, but you may never get the chance to view so many impressive pieces of modern designer furnishings. Beauty is fleeting, and can be expensive.
