Stylist won’t cut anti-gay Governor’s locks

Governor of New Mexico Susana Martinez may be facing some bad hair days because of her opposition to gay marriage and domestic partnerships.

The stylist of the Republican’s wispy light bob, Antonio Darden, refuses to cut her locks until she changes her mind.

Darden owns the popular “Antonio’s Hair Studio” in Santa Fe. When Martinez’s aids called the hair studio to schedule a cut, he told them no.

“They called the next day, asking if I’d changed my mind about taking the governor in, and I said no again.”

Darden is gay and has been with his partner for 15 years. He says the issue is about “equality and dignity for everyone” and told KOB-TV that he thinks “everybody should be allowed the right to be together.”

Martinez said she would not support same sex marriage or domestic partnerships. But Martinez recently appointed openly gay Republican Doug Howe to the Public Regulations Commission. This decision drew criticism from conservative constituents, but the governor’s office has said that Howe’s sexual orientation was simply, “not a factor in his selection.”
