By Ryan Collett

Brian Sims, a Democrat, became Pennsylvania’s first openly gay state representative on Tuesday night.

Sims was a member of the Victory Campaign Board, an organization aimed at helping LGBT politicians running for public office. He is also a celebrated policy attorney and civil rights advocate, working as the President of the Board of Directors of Equality Pennsylvania.

“Tonight we’re celebrating a historic victory for Pennsylvania and for Brian,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund. ”LGBT Pennsylvanians will finally have a voice in their state legislature, and what a strong and unyielding voice it will be.  We are thrilled for Brian, who ran a remarkable campaign.”

Sims’ campaign focused heavily on job creation, garnering him a good deal of support from several big-money donors. According to unofficial returns, Sims won the position with 51.6% of the vote.
