Is there an ah-ha moment when you took your idea and turned it into a business?
Yes. After weeks of tossing ideas around with my friends, we came to the conclusion that we’d start a LGBT travel agency. We’d all been working in the travel industry already, so the next step was to create our business. To be honest, I didn’t know where to start. I turned to my parents with my idea and they asked for my business plan. We didn’t have one. Before we began to build our business, we had to build our business plan. Developing our business plan turned our idea into a business. After we got our business plan together, my parents gave my the start up money needed to get our idea built and our business began.
How and why did you start QueerTrip?
My boyfriend and I were searching around online looking for where we wanted to go on our next trip. After searching around and not finding much, the idea came to us… lets start a LGBT travel agency. We didn’t like what we were seeing online and we knew we could create something unique. LGBT travelers face so many decisions when it comes to travel. There are all-gay cruise companies and gay-group cruises. There’s LGBT specific properties and gay-friendly properties. There’s companies that support the community and companies that do not. So, what’s a LGBT traveler to do? That’s why we created QueerTrip, a service to assist LGBT travelers. From cruises to hotels, destinations to events, we offer it all.
Where did the name come from?
My friends and I brainstormed for hours and hours thinking of names we thought would be catchy. We definitely wanted a name that would standout, grab attention, and make sense once you heard it. After checking several different keywords related to LGBT travel, we unanimously decided… QueerTrip, it’s the way you travel!
What was your goal when you started? How has that changed / evolved or has it?
The initial goal was to create a service and website where someone could find all the information on LGBT travel and book it. The goal hasn’t changed, but how we achieve that goal has evolved.
What’s your favorite thing about the amazing company you created?
There’s a lot that I love about QueerTrip, but my favorite thing is helping LGBT travelers with their travel.
What are the three things you’re most proud of?
That’s tough. I’d say I’m most proud of taking an idea and creating it into reality. It’s a very powerful yet rewarding feeling. I’m extremely proud of our QueerTrip team and the commitment we’ve all made to making our business successful. Lastly, I’m proud that we’re able to give back to our community.
What personal qualities make you a success?
I’d definitely say drive and passion. If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, then you can’t expect it to drive you forward.
What can we expect from you / QueerTrip in the future?
We are always evolving as does the travel industry. We’ve taken the opposite approach towards LGBT travel. Most businesses that focus on LGBT travel focus on the trip itself, whether its an all-gay cruise or a tour. We don’t want to be another tour or cruise company, we are a travel agency. Our goal is to help LGBT travelers whether its a cruise, honeymoon, a family event, or just a weekend getaway.
Name the three most influential people in your life / past or present.
Many people have influenced me throughout my life, but I’d say my parents (all 3 of them), my boss at CheapAir, and my boyfriend Bryan.
