A coalition of gay conservative groups published a full-page ad Wednesday in the Tampa Tribune newspaper during the second day of the Republican National Convention.

The ad, created by Log Cabin Republicans and Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry, features a recent quote from Tony Perkins, the anti-gay marriage president of the Family Research Council.

“The institution of marriage is the foundation of civil society,” reads the quote from Perkins. “Its success as an institution will determine our success as a nation.”

The ad puts a twist on Perkins’ pro-traditional marriage quote, but claiming it as a pro-gay marriage statement. Below the quote are photos of happy gay and lesbian couples and their children followed by the words, “We Agree.”

The Log Cabin Republicans and Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry are taking advantage of the large influx of Republicans in Tampa for the Convention that officially announced Mitt Romney as the party’s selection for presidential candidate.

The quote from Perkins is the language of the Republican Party’s official platform. Perkins claims to have drafted that particular section himself and called it, “one of the most conservative platforms the GOP has ever produced.”

Aside from adopting Perkins’ quote as a pro-gay marriage statement, the ad connects the gay marriage debate to the values of conservatism, saying, “As conservatives, we believe that the freedom to marry is directly in line with the core ideals and principles of the Republican Party – less government more individual freedom, personal responsibility and the importance of family.”
