Robert Kavalek

What do you do?

I am a travel consultant and owner of theTRAVELER – a personalized travel services business specializing in gay friendly, health & wellness resorts in Chile, Mexico and the USA. When I am not advising clients, I am usually taking a yoga class, having dinner with friends, cycling, watching a foreign film or traveling.

Why do you do it?

Traveling is transformative; it has shaped my life for the better. I have an incredible sense of wanderlust and love hearing stories from my clients after their return home from a vacation.

What accomplishment in your career to date are you most proud of?

Having the courage to quit my well paying desk job to follow my dream of advising clients on travel.

Who has made the biggest impact on you in life so far, and why?

My mom! While she suffered from depression, she insisted on caring for my younger brother who was born with severe developmental disabilities (in the 70s, most people institutionalized such people). My mother taught me compassion.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Quirky, curious and compassionate!

What is something that not a lot of people know about you, but you wish more people could know?

That I am a strong advocate for living a healthier life. I wouldn’t have had the courage to switch careers without having paid attention to my physical and mental health over the past five years. Life gets better as we age but only if we take care of ourselves.

If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not famous, living or dead, real or fictional, who would it be?

The Little Prince from Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s book by the same name. I’d love to travel to the moon as a child!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?

George Clooney or Bugs Bunny!

Where would you go if you had a time machine?

Ancient Rome at the time of Hadrian (Circa 128, C.E). Hadrian was not only an emperor but a humanist and a traveler. He also had a Greek lover (Antinous).

Anything else you would you like to tell our readers?

Let me plan your next vacation dream! Get out of town, detox at a beach resort in Mexico or go hiking in Patagonia. As a travel consultant, I can often get you room upgrades and other perks (e.g. free breakfasts, late checkouts) through my close relationships with travel suppliers and my affiliation with travel consortiums.
