Tank Carder of the Cleveland Browns is the latest in a succession of celebrities and athletes getting into trouble for what they post online.
Carder (@tankcarder) had a verbal altercation with another Twitter user, @causewereguys, which ended in homophobic tweets sent out late last week.
Carder tweeted, “@causewereguys unfollowed…you’re a faggot for that” on Wednesday, November 21, 2012.
Carder went on to defend his comment by tweeting to another Twitter user that, “I don’t agree with being gay or lesbian at all, but saying faggot doesn’t make me a homophobe, it’s just a word,” according to TowelRoad.
Carder has since recanted his statements, removing the tweets from his stream, and has offered an apology to those offended by his statements.
Carder tweeted on Monday: “I want to sincerely apologize for the word I used! I did not in anyway mean to offend anyone! That tweet does not define me as a person.”
Later that afternoon, he tweeted a second apology, saying, “I was not bashing the gay community in any way…if you knew me you would know I wouldn’t do that. Again I’m sorry if you were offended.”
