Vatican publishes official editorial condemning homosexuality and same-sex unions

The Vatican has issued a recent statement condemning the marriage equality movement in Europe and around the world. He stated that same-sex couples live in a “different reality” and continue to chase the “utopia” of equality.

The official newspaper of the Holy See, L’Osservatore Romano, printed a front-page editorial on Monday titled “Marriage Is Not a Contract.” Within the editorial, the Vatican claims that gay couples live in a “different reality,” where they believe that a “utopia” of equality will be created, without causing harm to society.

The Vatican’s editorial goes further, denouncing same-sex couples’ decisions to adopt children, pronouncing that it could only lead to “new forms of exploitation” in science. It adds that seeking equality for homosexuals has “caused such damage in the twentieth century.”

According to ThinkProgress, the Vatican said that even claiming that marriage between a man and woman is equal to same-sex marriage is denying “the truth that affects one of the basic structures of human society, the family.”

The Vatican’s editorial comes just days after Pope Benedict XVI’s World Day of Peace 2012 address on Friday, where he stated that the attempt to create equality throughout the world, while undermining the definition of marriage, is creating a harm in society.

“These principles are not truths of faith, nor are they simply a corollary of the right to religious freedom. They are inscribed in human nature itself, accessible to reason and thus common to all humanity,” Pope Benedict XVI said.

Pope Benedict XVI added that marriage equality threatens and creates situations that are a “serious harm to justice and peace.”

“There is…a need to acknowledge and promote the natural structure of marriage as the union of a man and a woman in the face of attempts to make it juridically equivalent to radically different types of union.”

The official stance of the Catholic Church has always been in condemnation of homosexuality, labeling it as “sinful” and that it cries of “socialism.” However, with numerous countries, including many throughout Europe, promoting marriage equality, the “utopia” being sought could become a reality as the world becomes more accepting of gay and lesbian marital rights.

Regardless of any opinion, the Vatican’s editorial warned of the problems gay marriage could create.

“We cannot base a society on these foundations without then paying a very high price as happened in the past when there was an attempt to achieve total economic and social equality. Why repeat the same mistake and chase after an unattainable utopia?”
