The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) continues to make headlines over their refusal to accept gay leaders into the organization. They believe that it’s harmful to have a gay man work for the BSA, but according to their application for employment, “conviction of a crime is not an automatic bar to employment.”
The application also says they won’t be hiring atheist or agnostics.
The BSA was established in 1910 and has been the one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, with more than two million members and one million adult volunteers.
The organization prides itself on training youth to become responsible citizens.
President of Human Rights Campaign Chad Griffin wrote an open letter stating, “It’s so rare these days to see such blatant discrimination written down on paper.”
Many people have questioned the BSA over their refusal to remove their position on gay men as employees. Public opinion recently has moved against the BSA and has urged the organization to be more inclusive and end discrimination against the LGBT community.
Senior fellow at the Research Council Peter Sprigg insists that the BSA shouldn’t change their opposition to gays. He has said that “most parents don’t want to send their sons on over night camping trips with adult males who are sexually attracted to males.”
The BSA did not return numerous calls by 429Magazine for a comment on this issue.
