In a move aimed at continuing to promote the success of LGBT pride events in England, former X Factor contestant Amelia Lily is to headline the Newcastle Northern Pride event this year.
Also accompanying Lily will be 1980s pop star Toyah for the free event that will take place July 20 in Leazes Park.
Lily has been touring recently with Girls Aloud and the LGBT community in England hopes that she will bring out even larger numbers for this year’s event.
18-year-old Lily was third in the 2011 X Factor and her debut single, “You Bring Me Joy”, was released on September 9 last year. It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart.
Peter Darrant, Northern Pride chairman said in a statement that “This year is our biggest line up yet with the biggest names in pop past and present.
“Along with the cabaret stage, family zone, dance tent, trans zone, women’s tent, health zone and sports zone this is going to be a fun packed day for everyone,” he added.
The event aims to help end homophobia and other discriminations against LGBT people.
“Northern Pride have an overall mission to reduce homophobia, promote awareness of equality and to unite LGBT communities across the region. We do this by staging a series of events to bring LGBT people and their families and friends together in an environment where they can feel at home, feel safe and ultimately be themselves,” says their website.
