Students at Bishop Watterson Catholic High School joined together to make a petition to reinstate beloved Physical Education teacher Carla Hale after she was allegedly fired for being a lesbian.
People close to Hale say the termination happened after Hale’s mother’s obituary was published in February mentioning her daughter and daughter’s partner as survivors.
Faculty and students all said that the teacher always put her students first and was respectful of everyone. The petition had collected 2,800 signatures as of noon today and rose to 8,418 signatures over the next three hours after the story went viral.
Senior Jackson Garrity started the petition that has since received an overwhelming amount of media attention.
The school claims its mission is to teach students about love, acceptance, and tolerance, yet it seems these values were lost in the mistreatment of Ms. Hale.
“My classmates and I feel very passionately about this issue,” Garrity told Outlook. “We (the senior class) agreed that we needed to take a stand as leaders and voice our opinions.”
Garrity wasn’t looking for credit or praise when he began the petition, and he believes the media is focusing on the wrong issues. He took to his private Twitter account to give a statement to the media.
“I’m glad this is getting interest, but to all the media outlets contacting me through twitter, I can’t handle all this attention,” he tweeted about an hour ago. “It’s supposed to be about Ms. Hale so I’m not doing any interviews I don’t have any comments the petition is my comment and that’s all I’m saying.”
