Montana Governor Steve Bullock is scheduled to sign the bill decriminalizing sodomy today in the Capitol Rotunda. It has been 16 years since the Supreme Court ruled that laws banning sodomy were unconstitutional, however that ruling wasn’t in the books or in effect in Montana until now.
LGBT-activists have been fighting the unjust legislation for two decades. The bill was stuck in the hands of Montana’s Republican-controlled House committee, where it was pushed down. However, Democrat Bryce Bennett took control of the effort to bring the bill to the forefront, which kicked off a vote in the House.
The bill passed with a vote of 65-34, and Bullock will finalize that legislation today.
