Days of Our Lives celebrated at GLAAD Media Awards

NBC’s Daytime Drama Days of Our Lives took home top honor for Outstanding Daily Drama at GLAAD’s 24th Annual Media Awards.

Paying tribute to “inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives,” GLAAD uses the media awards to celebrate the shows, artists, and public figures progressing the LGBT cause.

Days of Our Lives beat another daytime drama, CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful.

Freddie Smith became the first openly gay contracted role on the show as Sonny Kiriakis, and became a part of the show’s first gay couple along with Actor Chandler Massey in the show’s long history.

When asked if he was gay in real life during a Twitter chat with a fan, Smith responded with: “No, I’m straight, but I love playing Sonny [and]such an inspiring storyline.”

Nonetheless, he said he is honored by the role and the legions of fans he has gained as he accepted the award in Los Angeles.
