Equality Illinois, the state’s oldest and largest LGBT organization, was honored on Friday with a $2,750 prize from an emerging wine company. Egalité Wines is the first national wine created to advocate LGBT equality, and elected to donate part of its first quarter profits to the Illinois organization.
Darren Restivo, one of the principals of Biagio Cru and Estate Wines, the creator and importer of Égalité, said that gestures like these are what the company is about.
“Giving back to organizations that fight for Equality is at the center of Égalité’s message,” said Restivo in a press release. “We are thrilled to share Égalité’s proceeds with Equality Illinois, an organization that has worked continuously to secure, protect and defend equal rights for the LGBT community of Illinois.”
A donation will be made each quarter to an LGBT nonprofit organization with a focus on youth issues. Egalité chooses which organization based on a Facebook poll.
“We deeply appreciate that our friends on Facebook recognize the work Equality Illinois does every day on issues of importance to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Illinoisans, and that they voted for us in the Égalité poll,” Equality Illinois CEO Bernard Cherkasov said.
“We thank Égalité for its generous contribution to Equality Illinois and its continuing support for the LGBT community,” he concluded.
