New study indicates more companies are adopting inclusive non-discrimination policies

A new study from The Williams Institute at the University of Los Angeles has concluded that the majority of top 50 Fortune 500 companies and the top 50 Federal Contractors have policies in place that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. 

The Williams Institute released a press release stating, “As of January 2013, 90 percent of the top 50 federal contractors prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation, and 67 percent prohibited discrimination based on gender identity.”

Notable contractors such as Wal-Mart, Wells Fargo, Walgreens, and Target are among those corporations that prohibit discrimination based on sexual preference and gender identity.

“Among the top 50 federal contractors, there has been a 50 percent increase in the number of companies with gender identity non- discrimination policies since 2010. There has been a 26 percent increase in the number of top 50 Fortune 500 companies with gender identity non- discrimination policies since 2010.”

The Williams Institute says as of January 2013, 98 percent of the companies surveyed prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and 88 percent prohibit discrimination based on gender identity.
