In the most recent issue of Mexico’s “TVNovelas” magazine, Mexican heartthrob Sebastian Ligarde broke female hearts across the nation but gained a gay following after coming out of the closet.
“I’m gay and I say this with pride,” the “Quinceanera” soap star, who is largely known for playing villains, said in the interview. “No gay person should have to walk down the street with stigma stamped on his forehead. Sexual preference is genetic… and if God and my family knows it, then let the world know it.”
The 59-year-old actor credited openly gay singer Ricky Martin for providing him the courage to come out.
“I believe I’m at an age when I can help new values… and to have the courage to accept myself publicly, as Ricky Martin did,” Ligarde explained. “He has been an inspiration for me when it comes to talking about this subject.”
Ligarde later explained his journey, which included identifying as bisexual on a website.
“I was bisexual when I was young,” Ligarde added. “It doubled my chances at getting a date on Saturday night. I’ve been in a stable relationship for more than 20 years.”
The magazine interview ended with his thoughts on the future and being openly out.
“It’s a day of relief and a lot of courage. It takes courage to be honest. It’s much easier to lie,” Ligarde concluded.
