Arguably the biggest name in sports (and probably the world) for apparel, Nike released the 2nd line of their #BETRUE collection in celebration of the LGBT community on June 6.
The new footwear and t-shirt collection is inspired by and supports the LGBT community. According to Nike, the collection is in “celebration of sports as a universal language.”
The collection also features rainbow flip-flops, an iPhone 5 case with the graphic #BETRUE in rainbow lettering, and #BETRUE’s personalized Nike Free Run 5.0 with varying colors of the rainbow, rotating from left to right.
The collection comes after the influential brand signed openly lesbian WNBA player Brittney Griner as their first openly gay athlete in the company’s history. Griner’s contract entitles her to market and wear both men’s and women’s apparel.
This past weekend at the Boston Pride parade, openly gay NBA player Jason Collins also debuted one of the #BETRUE t-shirts as he proudly marched the streets of Boston.
For nearly 15 years, Nike has partnered with and been a strong ally for the LGBT community.
Profits from the sale of the #BETRUE collection will be donated to the LGBT Sports Coalition, an organization that is aiming to end homophobic discrimination in sports by 2016. Nike has said it wants to “support the goal of ending discrimination in sport.”
The collection is now available online and at participating retailers.
