Openly gay lawmaker Carl Sciortino Jr. from Massachusetts, who was recently endorsed by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee on a congressional bid, released a new campaign video on September 18, with a twist: the Democrat comes out to his Tea Party father as a liberal.
“I’ll never forget that conversation with my dad where I had to come out and tell him that I was… a Massachusetts liberal,” Carl Sciortino Jr. said in the campaign. His father adds, sounding less than pleased, “And he’s proud of it!”
During the video, they discuss ideological differences, including the politician’s decision to take on the NRA and the Tea Party.
“Among several good candidates, Carl proved these past two weeks that he is the type of bold leader we can count on,” Progressive Change Campaign Committee co-founder Stephanie Taylor said in a press statement.
Facing seven other Democratic candidates for the October 15 primary, Sciortino is running to replace Congressman Ed Markey in a special election. Markey is heading to take over the senate seat of Secretary of State John Kerry after winning a special election earlier in 2013.
“My father and I disagree on just about everything,” said Sciortino in a statement. “I am grateful that he was willing to appear in my TV ad even though he probably thinks he should be running against me.”
His competition, state senator Katherine Clark, also released a campaign video with a focus on women’s and family issues.
At the end of the video, they add that that they still love each other, despite their opposition.
