#LoveConquersHate, a social media campaign launched by the Human Rights Campaign on November 4, supports Russia’s LGBT community by spreading awareness about the oppressive anti-propaganda law that is being used in the state to silence queer people.
Celebrities such as Jonah Hill, Fergie, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ricky Martin can be seen sporting the HRC’s iconic “Love Conquers Hate” shirt, issued in Russian, on the campaign’s website, Love Conquers Hate. Participants are invited to share pictures of themselves wearing the new t-shirt on social media platforms with the hashtag #LoveConquersHate. The pictures will be added to the site’s gallery, in an effort to show how many people condemn the Russian anti-gay legislation.
“Love and equality are universal values that aren’t limited by language or national borders,” said HRC President Chad Griffin on HRC’s website. “We stand with Russia’s LGBT community and their allies, and we are committed to doing as much as we possibly can to support their efforts to repeal this heinous law.”
The Russian anti-propaganda law, purported to “protect” children, makes any mention or representation of homosexuality in public spaces illegal. It has been used to police and silence queer communities in the Russian state, and will be enforced during the Sochi Winter Olympics, which will be held in just a few months. The HRC, as well as many other LGBTQ groups, have called on the International Olympics Committee, as well as corporate sponsors of the Olympic Games, to condemn the anti-propaganda law, and ask for its repeal.
People traveling to Russia for the games may face charges and up to fifteen days’ jail time, as well as deportation, for any gestures that can be interpreted as spreading the “gay agenda.” This includes painting your nails rainbow colors, or displaying a rainbow flag.
The campaign is spreading the word about the discrimination in Russia through social media platforms, with the help of celebrity tweeters. Tim Gunn, of Project Runway fame, posted his support, saying “I’m standing with @HRC against the LGBT Intolerance in Russia. Please support the #LoveConquersHate campaign,” on his feed.
“Help fight for LGBT EQUALITY in Russia,” tweeted Ricky Martin. “Join @HRC by sharing a picture with #LoveConquersHate.”
