Sam Champion leaves “Good Morning America” for “Weather Channel” in Atlanta

Gay weather anchor Sam Champion gave his last weather forecast for “Good Morning America” in the early hours of the morning on December 4. He received an emotional send-off from fellow broadcasters, celebrating his final day with ABC.

News Anchor Josh Elliot was especially choked up to see Champion depart, saying: “I’m going to miss you and you are the best live broadcaster I’ve ever worked with. Thank you for giving the gift to us and to everybody at home every day.”

Champion’s position at ABC will be taken over by Ginger Zee. He is set to start working with the “Weather Channel” as managing editor in Atlanta.

He said that his new position was “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to do what I love most at a network that lives and breathes the weather.”

While he’s worked with ABC, “Good Morning America” has taken the lead with the time slot’s highest ratings, beating former frontrunner the “Today” show.

Now Champion will be joining forces with his former rival, “Today” weather co-host Al Roker. Roker’s one hour “Wake Up With Al” will be airing at 6:00 am and repeated at 10:00 am, while Champion’s new morning show will be in between, airing from 7:00 am to 10:00 am.

Champion has worked with ABC for twenty-five years, and been on the “Good Morning America” program since 2006.

He is set to anchor the network’s new morning show on the “Weather Channel” in early 2014.
