Sexual innuendo runs rampant in a new video campaign aimed at uninsured LGBT people, and some groups aren’t pleased.
Out2Enroll—a campaign created to inform the LGBT community about new coverage options available through the Affordable Care Act—released the controversial music video last week in order to reach a very important Obamacare demographic.
The video, titled “Get Enrolled,” was tagged as a “Full Frontal Freedom Production” and although it didn’t depict that slogan as explicitly as some might have expected (or hoped), the Christmas-themed ad gets as close as socially acceptable for a government-geared production aimed at encouraging Americans to enroll in healthcare.
The video—which is frank in identifying its target audience—doesn’t attempt to break free of typical gay stereotypes such as promiscuity, camp, and overt sexuality. Instead, it features a handful of jock-like hunks (with a variety vast enough to make Baskin Robbins feel defeated) suggestively sucking on candy canes and coyly bending over in front of one another in colorful, barely-there skivvies.
But who’s complaining?
Apparently more than just hate-spewing “Christian” readers at WND: “I simply can’t believe we have reached this level of degradation,” commented one viewer.
“This administration has taken our country down into the depths of depravity,” another posted.
On Sunday, December 22, Log Cabin Republicans—the only LGBT advocacy group on the Obamacare Repeal Coalition—denounced the video for supposedly exploiting gay people.
“This cynical ad betrays the depths Obamacare advocates will sink to in order to pad their pathetic enrollment numbers,” Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director Gregory T. Angelo said via a statement on the organization’s website. “As a self-proclaimed ‘fierce advocate’ of gay equality, President Obama would do well to distance himself from this nonsense and denounce it immediately. This ad is also an example of the left promoting harmful stereotypes that gay men are nothing more than sex-crazed lechers.”
“If anyone on the right made such a comparison,” Angelo continued, “liberals would be apoplectic. At a time when left-wing propagandists are decrying ‘Duck Dynasty‘s’ Phil Robertson for equating homosexuality with promiscuity and deviance, Out2Enroll and others should take a look in the mirror and ask if the truth is that they are the ones responsible for promoting such harmful stereotypes.”
However, despite the video’s campiness (with song lyrics like, “Before the doctor brings a lump of coal, get enrolled, get enrolled, get enrolled”), the Out2Enroll campaign makes its goal clear. The LGBT community is a key group that the White House is hoping to enroll before the December 31 deadline, in order to assure the success of the Obamacare enrollment period.
“Contrary to popular stereotypes, many LGBT people are struggling with a lack of insurance and difficulty accessing health care,” said Kellan Baker at the Center for American Progress, which commissioned the study.
James Williams of Trimpa Group, a partner of the Federal Agencies Project (which helped launch the campaign) added, “Health is an LGBT equality issue.
“Out2Enroll will help make sure not only that LGBT people and their families have legal protections from discrimination, but also that they enjoy equal access to the benefits of health reform.”
