The gay rights organization Freedom to Marry celebrated the legalization of same-sex marriage in Utah with a new video created by D’Arcy Benincosa Photography.
Watch it below.
The video, which features Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ song, “Same Love,” captures the landmark day in Utah where gay couples were finally permitted to legally marry.
The video’s description reads:
“December 20, 2013 was an emotional, landmark day for the people of Utah and all over the world. It was announced that Amendment 3 in Utah was overturned and same sex couples were allowed to marry. People rushed downtown to be married, show their love, and show us what courage looks like.”
On that day, US District Court Judge Robert J. Shelby ruled that Utah’s law banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. Thus, same-sex couples were permitted to marry in the state of Utah—to which hundreds of couples responded by immediately running to the clerk’s office to exercise their right to matrimony.
The ruling caused much controversy in this normally conservative state. Although gay rights organizations and advocates were thrilled with this surprising ruling, many politicians were struck with dismay.
Utah Governor Gary R. Herbert requested that the marriages be halted until the case was taken to the Court of Appeals; however, his request was denied by Judge Shelby.
