Ed Murray, a former Washington state Senator, was officially sworn in as Seattle’s 53rd mayor on Monday afternoon. Murray is the first openly gay person to hold the position.
Murray, who was elected in November, was joined by husband Michael Shiosaki and a record-breaking crowd of hundreds who attended the ceremony at City Hall.
“Hopefully, people see this as a sign of the type of mayor I want to be,” Murray said. “This is the people’s City Hall.”
Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which endorsed Murray’s candidacy last year, said: “All of us at Victory couldn’t be happier for Ed on this historic day. We look forward to watching him continue his strong leadership on behalf of the people of Seattle.”
