A luxury Mexican resort designed with LGBT travelers in mind

As LGBT inclusivity efforts increase in Mexico’s Riviera Maya—a major spring break party destination—dot429 had the pleasure of spending a weekend at the posh and tranquil Nizuc Resort & Spa, an extension of Mexico’s elite Las Brisas Hotel Collection.

The weekend, hosted by Carlos Melia, luxury travel curator and co-founder of the Luxury Gay Travel Network, included members of Zoom Vacations (Bryan Herb), First In Service, Kennedy Travel (Richard Pampinella), and YouTube (Davey Wavey). The experience offered an array of activities from pampered spa treatments and delectable dining, to water activities in a private and eco-protected location.

Unlike many of its Cancun counterparts, Nizuc Resort is situated in the heart of Punta Nizuc, the newest luxury destination in the Mexican Caribbean and the most desirable land in the Mayan Region. The resort boasts 274 suites and private villas, multiple pools, six-world class restaurants, mangroves, a 30,000-square-foot spa, and large areas for corporate events.

The resort’s aesthetic combines modern design with a strong Asian influence to project a peaceful, zen-like atmosphere. A decorative selection of raw and elemental materials encourages visitors’ minds to feel refreshed while still remaining connected to the land’s rich cultural heritage.

The Nizuc logo, a depiction of a dog, reflects the loyal code of man’s best friend—a quality the resort’s staff and first-class service diligently adhere to. Upon our arrival, it was obvious that much teamwork and preparation had gone into our stay. Whether it’s the motion of an employee’s hand over their heart as we pass, the synchronized movements of waitstaff during a five course chef’s dinner at Ramona, the contemporary Mexican restaurant, or small details like complimentary chocolate, tequila, and dried fruits en suite, one can’t help but realize that a stay at Nizuc is meant to leave a lasting impression.

All suites include floor to ceiling windows with breathtaking views of the ocean, Egyptian cotton linens, a large free-standing soak tub, rainfall showerheads, flat screen TVs, WiFi, L’Occitane products, in-room Nespresso machine—even butler service. Rooms also come with a safe-deposit box, and drivers wait at each building to transport guests to any of the property’s attractions.

In addition to the delicious cuisine at Ramona, dot429 was treated to meals at Café De La Playa, which offers an extensive breakfast buffet packed with fresh juice, pastries, and both American and Mexican staples; Ni, the flavorful Peruvian lunchtime retreat that boasts delicious varieties of Ceviche; Terra Nostra, for an Italian fix; as well as Indochine, which provides a top-notch menu including everything from sushi to Pad Thai. And, of course, there was room service upon request.

For those ready to soak up the sun, there are plenty of options: grab a tropical drink from the infinity pool bar, relax on the beach in your personal cabana, or grab a spot on one of the many private decks/seating sections situated discreetly along the water. If you’re one for more excitement, paddle-boarding through the mangrove, snorkeling, even yoga in the ocean may be just what the doctor ordered.

A trip to the spa is definitely a must if one is trying to take off the edge from a busy work week. Treat yourself to a guided hydro-therapy experience, or take advantage of one of the many other signature treatments such as facials and massages.

One of the resort’s main draws is its privacy, which for many travelers in the LGBT community can make or break an experience. Not once during the stay did we ever feel uncomfortable or judged. Nizuc also revealed that many of their staff identify as LGBTA. With Nizuc’s private but convenient layout, it’s easy to come away feeling as if the whole experience was designed with the luxury LGBT market in mind. (Note that the resort does allow children; however, renovations are currently underway on the “adults only” portion of the property).

Whether you’re looking for a quick getaway to recharge, wanting to book a romantic trip with your partner, or want a spot that can accommodate a large group, Nizuc Resort & Spa is eager to provide a tailored experience to fit every luxury traveler’s interests.
