Planet Fitness sued over transgender-inclusive policy

Planet Fitness is now being sued by the person whose membership was revoked due to her reaction to a transgender woman in the women’s locker room.

As a part of the chain’s non-discrimination policy, transgender members are allowed to use the locker room of the gender they identify as. Yvette Cormier claims she was unaware of this policy when she saw someone she described as “very manly” in the women’s locker room.

She later told CNN, “I wanted to know why there was a man in the women’s locker room. He looked like a man, and that’s what stopped me in my tracks.”

She said she immediately went to the front desk to complain, where she learned that Planet Fitness’ non-discrimination policy is transgender-inclusive. A call to the corporate offices only confirmed the policy.

Cormier said, “If you have male parts you don’t need to be in the women’s locker room. I don’t care what you are; I don’t care if you’re gay, lesbian, transgender or transvestite. I am uncomfortable with you as a male in my locker room, in my restroom.”

Unsatisfied with the response she had gotten, Cormier felt she needed to tell everyone in the women’s locker room that a “man” was using the woman’s locker room—neglecting to mention that the person in question identified as a woman.

A few days later, Cormier’s membership was revoked.

Planet Fitness said in a statement, “The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was canceled.”

Cormier filed a lawsuit in response, claiming that the policy on gender identity creates a hostile and offensive environment for women and children, and that canceling her membership without making her fully aware of its policies is a breach of contract.

“They should point that out before you sign up to join their gym or post it on the front of the bathroom door,” Cormier said in a previous interview. She is seeking more than $25,000 in damages for the loss of her membership and “severe emotional distress.”

She also told CNN, “This is all new to me. I didn’t go out to specifically bash a transgender person that day. I was taken aback by the situation. This is about me and how I felt unsafe.”
