Nearly 30 years ago Heather Duke uttered the words “How Very” on screen and the world would never be the same. Among those that ruled Westerburg High, the iconic Winona Ryder among them, a crown of cruelty was worn. But no one got away unscathed, and some paid with their lives.
Somehow, though, Heather Chandler escaped the clutches of the psychotic J.D. (Christian Slater), and, with Heather Duke dead, she was finally able to take the reigns. The film was the dark comedy Heathers, and the wicked junior was portrayed, of course, by none other than a pre-Beverly Hills 90210 Shannen Doherty. Displaying a coy, cool innocence, she was at first the mousy of the four, then the tyrant of them all.
Now, it seems, it’s time to revisit the halls of Westerburg High and see what ghosts still lurk. With Doherty in a key role, TV Land has planned a reboot of Heathers where the nerds now reign supreme. Let’s hope this re-imagining can match the deft, still-relevant world of Sherwood, Ohio, keeping the pitch-black wit in place. The one-liners alone should’ve won an Oscar back then.
Much like her characters. Doherty has had a tumultuous life over the years, her recent battle with cancer has admittedly humbled her. Fighting breast cancer since February 2015, she now seems to be on the mend. When she appeared on her good friend Chelsea Handler’s show just last month, Doherty stated, “I think what’s beautiful and hard and interesting about cancer is that it tears you down and builds you.”
Information about Doherty’s new Heathers character is currently under wraps (TV Land states that she will be in a “pivotal, unnamed character”), but it’ll be exciting to see her back in one of the roles that made her an icon.
