Alison Bechdel is Vermont’s New Cartoonist Laureate

Today, Vermont became a little more adorable that usual. The legendary cartoonist Alison Bechdel, who brought you not only Fun Home (now an apparently awesome musical) and Are You My Mother? but the long-standing and possibly soon-to-be-revived Dykes to Watch Out For, is being honored as the state’s cartoonist laureate.

Now you may be asking yourself, what’s a cartoonist laureate? Sure, I’ve heard of a poet laureate but this is ridiculous!

The answer is that, Vermont being Vermont, they’re the only state to have such an honor. Cute, isn’t it? Frankly we’re shocked that anyone but Alison Bechdel ever held the title. New Yorker cartoonist Edward Koren was the previous laureate. He passed the torch to Bechdel by drawing a super adorable collaboration cartoon with her to commemorate the occasion.
