On the holiday commemorating the beginning of the United States of America, Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia and his boyfriend Matthew Mendez began a new chapter of their own lives by getting engaged to be married.
The proposal took place on board the iconic Queen Mary cruise liner, which is permanently docked in Long Beach harbor, as spectators watched the yearly fireworks show. Against this backdrop, Garcia proposed to Mendez, 9 years to the day of their first meeting.

Garcia’s mayoral election represented many firsts for the Southern California city. The 39-year-old was the city’s youngest mayor when he assumed the office in 2014. He is also the first Latino and openly-gay city chief.
Garcia and Mendez have dated since 2008 and currently live together in a downtown Long Beach loft with their cat, Tommy.
They have yet to announce a date for the nuptials.
