Sheriff Clarke, Anti-LGBT Activist, Joins Homeland Security

The most recent addition to Donald Trump’s administration further cements his presidency as one of the most anti-LGBT in modern American history. On Wednesday, amid a deluge of Russia-related news, the controversial Milwaukee sheriff David A. Clarke accepted a senior position at the Department of Homeland Security.

While much of the coverage surrounding his appointment focused on the gruesome death of an inmate at a jail ran by Clarke, the lawman brings with him a long record of blisteringly bigoted statements against gay and transgender people.

Transgender persons suffer from mental disorders more than physiological disorders.

“Folks,” Clarke began on his podcast “The People’s Sheriff” earlier this year, “more evidence that transgender persons suffer from mental disorders more than physiological disorders.” He went on to criticize the left for employing a “totalitarian attitude” to protect “any freakish lifestyle.”

In the same address, he cited pseudo-scientific claims that transgender identities stem from childhood trauma “100% of the time.”

They “need psychotherapy, not access to cross-sex restrooms,” he said.

In 2015, when the Supreme Court passed down its landmark ruling legalizing gay marriage, Sheriff Clarke took to Twitter to call for “rage, then revolt.”

Clarke, who is African-American, has also made inflammatory comments about other groups, including black Americans.

“Let me tell you why blacks sell drugs and involve themselves in criminal behavior, instead of a more socially acceptable lifestyle,” he said on his radio program. “Because they’re uneducated, they’re lazy, and they’re morally bankrupt. That’s why.”

Clarke will manage the Department of Homeland Security office in charge of reaching out to state, local, tribal, territorial governments and local law enforcement agencies.
